It is very common to find a middle aged man going bald. About 60% of men will experience some type of hair loss by the age of 30 and hair loss incidence increases as we grow older. The most common cause of hair loss in men is androgenetic alopecia or male pattern hair loss.
Androgenetic alopecia typically starts as a receding hair line that slowly goes upward to the crown, until only a rim of hair that runs from the temples to the back of the head is left. In worse cases, total baldness can occur.
This type of hair loss occurs because of hair follicles that are genetic sensitivity to dihydrotestosterone or DHT. DHT is a hormone that is naturally produced in the body. When the male hormone testosterone interacts with the enzyme 5 alpha reductase, DHT if formed. What is so surprising about this is that, this transformation occurs in special cells in the body and this includes the hair follicle cells. Since androgenetic alopecia is a genetic type of hair loss, this is an inevitable condition if it runs in the family.
Treatment options of androgenetic alopecia is to inhibit the formation of DHT. Presently, there are different kinds of hair loss treatment products available. There are medications that increase the blood supply to the hair follicles and some directly stop the formation of DHT.
